Michael Jackson Doctor Pleads Not Guilty To Involuntary Manslaughter

Conrad Murray's trial slated to start March 28.

Michael Jackson's former personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray entered a plea of not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the pop star at his arraignment on Tuesday morning (January 25).

According to the Los Angeles Times, when asked by judge Michael Pastor how he pleaded to the charge, Murray said, "Your honor, I am an innocent man." When Pastor interrupted and asked Murray what his plea was, the cardiologist said, "Therefore, I plead not guilty."

The brief hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court ended with Pastor setting a March 28 date for the start of a trial in the case. Murray faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted, and the Times noted that he surprised the judge by invoking his right to a speedy trial, which meant the case would have to begin by late March. Pastor noted the rarity of a defendant asking to have a speedy trial, then set jury selection for the week of March 28 and said he was inclined to allow television coverage of the trial that the defense expects will last two months.

Lawyers for Murray have maintained his innocence all along, saying he did not do anything that "should have" caused the 50-year-old pop icon's death. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson died of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol mixed with a cocktail of other sedatives.

Murray has admitted to administering propofol to Jackson in the hours before the singer's death, but the defense appears to be gearing up to claim that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of the drug after he woke in a panic from a fitful night of sleep.

During a preliminary hearing earlier this month to determine if there was enough evidence to hold Murray over for trial, the physician's attorneys said that there was evidence Jackson injected or drank a fatal amount of the drug when the doctor was not looking.

Leighton Meester Channels Ke$ha On New Song

The 'Gossip Girl' star gets her party on with 'Front Cut,' a new track that just hit the Internet.

For a while there it seemed like Leighton Meester was only going to be "Country Strong," but now she's again embracing her dance-club music roots on a new track. On Tuesday, a new Meester tune titled "Front Cut" hit the Web.

The "Gossip Girl" star's track, a certain club banger that could easily be confused with any song in Ke$ha's dance-heavy discography, features the writing, production and vocal talents of Clinton Sparks.

"I'm too fly to be all up in this line, boy/ I should get a front cut/ I should get a front cut," Meester proclaims in the opening lines of the song — which is all about getting key access to a slamming party — before some killer keyboards and heavy beats kick in. She goes on to rap/sing, "You see me coming through/ Not just me, my girlfriends too/ You know what we came to do/ That's why we in front of you."

Meester really displays her swagga on the song's bridge, when she goes on to sing, "Don't tell me I gotta wait in the line/ I said f--- the front door, I should go in through the side/ Why don't you/ Lift up that rope to let through/ All these girls in my crew / Give me a drink or a few/ I mean a bottle or two/ We've been out here too damn long / And I hear Clint Sparks playin' my song/ Got my diamond and my Louboutins on/ Ya better hurry up or I'll be gone/ Don't tell me I gotta wait in no line/ 'Cause there's plenty of other clubs that want me inside."

With no official release date for the track or any definite plans for an album release, it seems that for now Meester fans will have to just enjoy the song online. The singer/actress' pop-star career has been long-simmering, to say the least. She was expected to drop an album in 2010, but that never happened.

In 2009, she appeared on Cobra Starship's "Good Girls Go Bad," then she hooked up with Robin Thicke on the song "Somebody to Love."

So what do you think of Meester's new club banger? Share your opinions in the comments.

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray To Be Arraigned

Murray to head to trial in death of Jackson following Tuesday hearing.
By Gil Kaufman

Cardiologist Dr. Conrad Murray, the only person charged in the June 2009 death of Michael Jackson, will be arraigned on Tuesday morning (January 25) on an involuntary manslaughter charge. Murray, who was serving as the 50-year-old pop icon's personal physician at the time, is expected to plead not guilty in the case.

According to CNN, the hearing in front of Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, is only slated to last a few minutes. While Murray has the right to demand a trial within 60 days, it is not expected that a date will be set for one on Tuesday.

After more than a week of testimony, Pastor ruled during a preliminary hearing in early January that there was enough evidence to bring Murray's case to trial. In the meantime, Murray remains free on $75,000 bond, but Pastor blocked the doctor from using his California medical license until the trial is completed.

"Michael is not with us today because of an utterly inept, incompetent, reckless doctor — the defendant Conrad Murray," Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said in his final arguments in the preliminary hearing, where a series of witnesses recounted Murray's actions during the minutes and hours before and after Jackson's death. The King of Pop died as a result of what the Los Angeles County coroner's office called acute propofol poisoning, a reference to a powerful surgical anesthetic that the singer reportedly requested as a sleep aid to combat chronic insomnia.

While prosecutors appear to be building a case that Murray acted recklessly in attending to Jackson in the singer's final hours, CNN reported that the doctor's lawyers appeared satisfied with the results of the preliminary hearing thanks to some testimony they got from prosecution witnesses that might help raise some reasonable doubt about their client's guilt at trial.

"I think the prosecution is going to change their tactics in this case," defense lawyer J. Michael Flanagan said after the preliminary hearing. "It's not the same as what they gave in opening statements." The defense reportedly is set to argue that it was Jackson himself who administered the final, fatal dose of propofol after waking in a panic from a fitful night of sleep. One of the prosecution's expert witnesses in the case admitted under cross-examination that he made a math mistake and that the recalculation supports the defense theory that Jackson may have given himself the dose of propofol that killed him.

CNN reported that Dr. Richard Ruffalo, an anesthesiologist hired by the prosecution, was the last witness to take the stand and his admission about making a mistake on the calculation of the level of propofol in Jackson's stomach fluid reportedly elicited gasps from the members of Jackson's family who were sitting in the hearing room.

Murray's lawyers have suggested that a frustrated Jackson may have poured the anesthetic — which is administered intravenously — into his juice bottle while the doctor was out of his bedroom. "Now it doesn't make sense unless he ingested it orally in a huge amount," Ruffalo testified. The anesthesiologist added that Murray could still be at fault for leaving dangerous drugs near a patient who was allegedly addicted to sedatives and sleep aids.

"It's like leaving a syringe next to a heroin addict," Ruffalo stated. "If he's not getting what he wants, when you leave the room he might reach for it himself ... Either way, it doesn't matter. He abandoned his patient and didn't resuscitate appropriately." Ruffalo said Murray should have anticipated that Jackson, who had previously asked to inject himself with the drug, might potentially administer it to himself. "He gets upset if he doesn't get his milk," he said, explaining that Jackson often referred to propofol as his "milk."

In addition, the pathologist who conducted Jackson's autopsy acknowledged it was possible, though improbable, that the singer gave himself the fatal propofol dose. Speaking to police two days after Jackson's death, Murray told investigators that a sleepless Jackson had begged him for more propofol on the day he died. The King of Pop was in the midst of a grueling series of rehearsals for his planned "This Is It" comeback shows at London's O2 Arena at the time of his death.

A civil lawsuit filed last year by Jackson's mother against the producer of the concerts, AEG Live, alleged that the company had warned the entertainer several weeks before he died that if he missed any more rehearsals they were going to "pull the plug" on the gigs, which the cash-strapped Jackson was depending on to revive his stalled career.

'They say all rappers want to be basketball players, [and] all basketball players want to be rappers,' says wife of Carmelo Anthony, La La Vazquez.

Hip-hop and sports are practically kindred spirits, especially when it comes to basketball. At this year's NBA All-Star Weekend, a number of hoop stars, and the wife of one player in particular, wholeheartedly agreed with this observation.

"They always say all rappers want to be basketball players, [and] all basketball players want to be rappers," La La Vazquez, wife of New York Knick Carmelo Anthony and ex-MTV VJ, told MTV News.

Over the years, a number of NBA players have actually become rappers on the side. Besides four championships — three with the Los Angeles Lakers, one with the Miami Heat — Shaquille O'Neal also managed to release four albums. The first, 1993's Shaq Diesel, went platinum and the third, 1996's You Can't Stop the Reign, featured a pair of verses from the Notorious B.I.G. on its title track. More recently, L.A. Laker Ron Artest has embarked on a rap career, while his teammate Kobe Bryant once kicked rhymes on R&B singer Brian McKnight's "Hold Me."

Not every player necessarily has rap dreams to go along with their hoop dreams, though.

"Every player except me wants to be a rapper," said Dwight Howard of the NBA's Orlando Magic. "I don't want to do the rap thing."

Howard did add though about his fellow NBA stars, "We love music. We love hip-hop and we support it."

LeBron James, who is famously and charitably good friends with Jay-Z, mentioned how basketball players are frequently name-checked in song. For example, on Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind," the MC rhymes, "Jesus paying LeBron, I'm paying Dwyane Wade."

This synergy between players and rappers ultimately boils down to mutual respect.

"We all came from nothing," Boston Celtic Kevin Garnett told us. "The appreciation factor for each other, the fact you gotta grind and work hard to get where you at, it's similar. It's a very similar industry."

Garnett's teammate and fellow All-Star Rajon Rondo added, "We respect those guys the way they respect us. It kind of goes hand in hand. Rappers love to come see us play. We love to see them perform."

What do you think of the ongoing love between hip-hop and hoops? Sound off in the comments!

Usher Says New 'Rev Pop' Project Is A 'Movement'

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like 'Yeah!' and 'OMG.'
By James Montgomery

Usher
Photo: MTV News

With the success of songs like "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," "Hot Tottie" and "OMG," Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he's looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a "movement."

It's something he's calling "Rev Pop" — or, simply, "Rev" — and though he's already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn't reveal much, he did let it be known that "Rev" isn't exactly something new. In fact, he's been doing it for a while now.

"I'll give it to you this way: At a later date, I'll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I've done it before, I did it with 'Yeah!' " he said, "taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with 'OMG,' once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

"It's bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here," he said, gesturing toward his heart, "And that's what Rev Pop is. There's more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that's just what I'm going to tell you right now. 'Rev' is what it's called ... the movement is called Rev."

Usher wouldn't say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they're going to be impressed ... if not a little shocked.

"Stay alive," he smiled, "Because you're definitely going to be in for a surprise."

Katy Perry Denies Feud With Britney Spears

Singer calls the media 'filth' for implying she was attacking Spears for using product placement in her 'Hold It Against Me' video.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry
Photo: John Parra/ WireImage

Last week, when Katy Perry answered a question tweeted by her California Dreams tourmate Marina and the Diamonds about product placement in music videos, she never expected to touch off a media firestorm. And she's plenty mad that she did.

It all started with Perry's reply to Marina's query for "a consensus on product placement in videos." Perry wrote on Twitter, "Do it with style and grace ... Not so 'In [your] face like some. [You] have to get creative with it. Some artists don't care though, and you can tell."

Given that Perry's response occurred hours after the premiere of Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" video (a version of which is loaded with promotional shots for products like Spears' own Radiance perfume, Make Up for Ever cosmetics and dating website PlentyofFish.com), most were quick to interpret it as a dig at Spears for selling out. And that made Perry very angry.

Early Wednesday morning (February 23), Perry took to Twitter once again to rip the tabloid media (or as she calls them, "filth") for their speculative and hurtful ways, claiming in a series of messages that they manipulated her words in an attempt to pit her against Spears, and, because of that, were basically responsible for the decline of civilization as we know it.

"Dear tabloid media a.k.a. FILTH: please note I expressed an overall feeling about product placement, [its] role in videos and the art of them being compliment[ary] or sticking out," Perry wrote. "Most, if not ALL, popsters welcome deals with products [to] offset costs of big-budget vids in these recessional music industry times. I'VE used them in MY vids before and am happy [to be] able [to] make a better vid because of [them].

"Once AGAIN, stop pitting artist against artist for [your] sensational satisfaction," she continued, "and stick to what [you're] best [at]: lying, gossiping, exaggerating and overall lending a hand [to] the deterioration of a generation."

What do you think of artists using product placement in their videos? Tell us in the comments.

Lady Gaga Gets Ethereal for Viva Glam MAC Video

'I wanted the campaign to feel a bit more timeless,' company's creative director explains.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga for MAC Viva Glam
Photo: Nick Knight

Lady Gaga's new short film for her work with MAC's Viva Glam line is an ethereal, ghostly affair that blends well with the pop star's current color scheme. The Nick Knight-directed clip features Gaga in shades of blush, nude and champagne almost floating alongside romantic images of martinis, flowers and perfume bottles. Airy house music plays as Gaga's flowing dress is blown about and she seduces the camera in various states of undress.

For photos of Gaga's Viva Gam line, click here.

This year's Viva Glam shades, which raise money for the MAC AIDS Fund, will be available for purchase next month. James Gager, SVP, Creative Director of MAC said that hooking up with Gaga for a second year (she teamed up with Cyndi Lauper last year) seemed like the most natural fit.

"She's an amazing fit for us in so many ways. I think the most important quality is that she is real and she speaks her mind. When MAC originally started, it was truly a place for all the misfits of the world, where they could feel comfortable and know that they wouldn't be criticized. We've always been all about welcoming everyone into our universe. Gaga is bringing that same spirit to the world. She spreads this message of 'Don't be afraid to be who you are, don't let people put you down,' and radiates this sense of empowerment. Look at how courageously she's been speaking out lately," he said. "She's so passionate, focused and articulate, and I think we are, too. Especially with Viva Glam, we really put ourselves out there and every cent goes to the cause."

As for the sexy video, Gager explained that it was a joint effort, like so many of her projects. "Working with Gaga is very much a partnership: It's a team effort and collaboration," he said. "The photographer Nick Knight, Gaga's stylist Nicola Formichetti and I wanted the campaign to feel a bit more timeless, but still very much her. Last year was all about a fun, feminine kind of sensibility, so I think if you compare that with what we've created this year, it's refreshing to see her in a way you wouldn't expect. We thought: 'Let's go with the idea of nude and the stripping away of what she's famous for and make her a little more elusive and evasive.' The tone is undeniably glamorous as well."

Not only were the visuals for the campaign inspired by Gaga's aesthetic, but it seems this year's shades were also modified to fit Gaga's current look. "Jennifer Balbier [the company's SVP of product development] and I felt that after last year's shades — Gaga's fun pink and Cyndi's coral red — it was time to move in a new direction," he explained. "I think Gaga herself has moved into nude tones, and we didn't want to shoot something that was out of place. So she was actually part of the inspiration."

Last week, when Gaga appeared on "Good Morning America" to talk about Viva Glam, she said her outfit was condom-inspired, in honor of the lipstick's AIDS-awareness mission.

"I want to get people started at home at a younger age with their children talking about HIV, talking about AIDS, talking about safe sex," Gaga explained.

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.

For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.

Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

New Led Zeppelin On The Way? Jason Bonham Hints At 'Jam' Sessions With Jimmy Page -- But Not Robert Plant

Drummer admits he doesn't know what will come of 'new material.'
By Chris Harris

Jason Bonham
Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images

On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.

Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."

It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.

"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."

He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."

Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

Who Should Star In The Remake Of "The Bodyguard"?

A remake of

I remember going to see "The Bodyguard" in the theater in 1992. I was 12 at the time, and it was the first rated R movie that my parents deemed acceptable for me to see. I remember feeling terror the first time the psycho stalker's handiwork was shown on screen. I remember my heart beating faster the first time Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner kissed. I remember feeling elated at the idea that these two people from such different backgrounds could fall for each other. And when Whitney sang, "I Will Always Love You"—let's just say that the song got the repeat listening treatment.

Apparently, Warner Brothers wants to make this magic happen again. Yes, you guessed right. They are planning a remake of "The Bodyguard." The story will be basically the same—a mega pop star with a stalker reluctantly decides to heed the advice of her bodyguard. Only, instead of a former Secret Service guy, this bodyguard will be an Iraq war veteran. And the stalker will be even more diabolical given the access to Twitter, Facebook, and blogs. But who will they cast in the lead roles? After the jump, some pairings we'd be super excited to see.

Ricky Gervais Writes Oscar Monologue for Anne Hathaway and James Franco

Ricky Gervais Writes Oscar Monologue for Anne Hathaway and James Franco

On Wednesday, Anne Hathaway assured us that she and James Franco were going to be the nicest awards show hosts ever when they tackle emceeing duties at Sunday's Oscars. Hathaway, who at 28 is history's youngest Academy Awards host, said she had "no business" doing what British comedian Ricky Gervais did at the 2011 Golden Globes, making harsh cracks about Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and pretty much any other celeb that caught his eye. And while Gervais says he doesn't regret his Golden Globes zingers, Hathaway seems to have hit a nerve. Or at least, a funny bone.

On his blog this week, Gervais presents a cheeky monologue he wrote for Hathaway and Franco to perform at the Oscars, "in case they have a few minutes to fill." Here's an excerpt of what Gervais would like them to say:

James Franco: You probably know me from 127 Hours where I play a man trapped in an enclosed space who decides he would rather cut his own arm off than stay where he was. Now that sounds "way out" but wait till half way through this f***ing ceremony and you'll start to identify with him.

Anne Hathaway: And I'm the new Catwoman. The first white woman to play that role since Michelle Pfeiffer. I want it to be an inspiration to all white people everywhere. Your dreams can come true in Hollywood too.

James Franco: It's a daunting task hosting The Oscars but we're not alone. Presenting awards tonight will be a string of Hollywood legends and some other actors who have a film out in March or April. Usually they hire comedians to host The Oscars, but tonight, instead, you get us!

Anne Hathaway: No comedians tonight. And do you know why? Because comics are ugly.

James Franco: Especially that rude obnoxious one who played the Steve Carell part in the English remake of The Office.

Read the rest here. As you may have gathered from that last dig, Gervais spends most of the monologue making fun of himself -- and he's even harsher than he was on Tim Allen at the Globes. We have a feeling we won't be hearing any of these jokes on Sunday night... but we hope that Hathaway and Franco manage to be half as funny as Gervais!

Military watches for men are definitely the best watches for men by a mile

Taking these evidence into account, it's not difficult to realize that military watches are not just suitable for military purposes, but also for everyday wear, and for consumers who are looking to add a sporty and cool look to their accessories.
It is evident that military watches are straying away from the stereotype of dull, huge, and a boring single-function device. An increasing number of them currently have a multitude of state-of-the-art functions like barometer, compass, atomic, eco-driven, and solar-powered. Are all of these functions only applicable to military personnel? Of course not. Any individual can benefit from these features and that's the reason why these type of fashionable yet tough watches are starting to become a hot-seller among a wide range of consumers, particularly outdoor enthusiasts. You don't have to be working in the army to buy a great fashionable watch like these!
The definition of military watches for men are nothing more than a nomenclature of categorizing of watches, instead of a representation of its actual consumer market.

So in conclusion, I feel that military watches are the best watches around with their functionality and great looks which can light up any ordinary guy on the streets. Definitely recommended!

'Unknown' Schools The Box-Office Competition

'I Am Number Four' opens at a disappointing #3 over the holiday weekend.

Liam Neeson has a solid future as an action hero if he wants it, but "I Am Number Four" may have stumbled in its attempt to build a new sci-fi young-adult franchise, according to box-office receipts.

"Unknown" took in an estimated $25.6 million over the four-day President's Day weekend, making the Alfred Hitchcock-inspired Neeson thriller #1. Family-friendly CG-animated film "Gnomeo & Juliet," in its second week of release, was just behind with $24.8 million, according to reports. "I Am Number Four" was a surprising third with a $22.6 million theatrical debut.

The success of "Unknown" follows on the heels of 2008's "Taken," the surprise smash with somewhat similar themes that proved a capable action vehicle for Neeson, the 58-year-old actor who was previously better known for dramatic fare. "Unknown" co-stars January Jones ("Mad Men") and Diane Kruger ("Inglourious Basterds"), and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra ("Orphan").

With echoes of the supernatural alienation of "Twilight" and the soapiness of CW dramas (some of the folks involved worked on "Smallville" and "Angel"), "I Am Number Four" is based on a young adult novel with obvious eyes toward sequels woven into the plot, about an alien war that comes to Earth. The movie cost between $50 and $59 million to produce, according to the Los Angeles Times, which means the somewhat soft-opening doesn't bode well for Disney's future plans with the franchise.

Speaking of sequels, "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son" debuted with $19 million to land at #5. Both prior entries in the fat-suit-driven Martin Lawrence comedy series — "Big Momma's House" and "Big Momma's House 2" — opened much stronger in 2000 and 2006, respectively.

The Adam Sandler/ Jennifer Aniston comedy "Just Go With It" dropped to #4 in its second week of release with $18.2 million — roughly a 40 percent drop from its debut. Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" fell much harder, taking in $13.6 million in its second weekend, a 54 percent drop. The 3-D documentary has taken in $48.2 million, however, which is far more than its reported $13 million production budget.

The overall box-office numbers were down roughly 30 percent from last year's $240 million gross the same weekend. "Avatar" 's strength in theaters certainly didn't hurt around that time.

Check out everything we've got on "Unknown."

Odd Future Ride The Bus, Become Unicorns

We ride along with hip-hop's unlikely breakout stars, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Christopher "CJ" Smith

Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator
Photo: MTV News

The morning after they terrified Jimmy Fallon, Brandon T. Jackson, Felicia Day and most of Middle America with their lurching, unhinged performance of "Sandwitches" on "Late Night," 45 percent of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (or "OFWGKTA" if you're nasty) were sprawled out on a Chinatown bus bound for Philadelphia. They weren't particularly happy about it.

Tyler, the Creator — who, in recent months, has become the rather unwilling focal point of the group (if "group" is even the right word) — sat facing forward, surveying the rapidly disappearing New York City skyline. His eyes were wide and the brim of his omnipresent Supreme ball cap jutted up at a 90-degree angle (the same cap made an appearance on "Late Night," but only after Tyler had removed a green ski-mask with an inverted cross scrawled on it), a sartorial choice that made him look like a member of Fat Albert's Junkyard Gang. He was thinking about the previous night's performance, which, to this point, is the high-water mark in Odd Future's rather odd anti-career. And when he finally spoke, in a gravelly voice that belied his 19 years, any and all resemblances to cartoon characters ceased. Because, whether he realized it or not, what he said was unquestionably real.

"When people say you can do whatever you want, I really thought that sh-- was corny, until this moment right now," he said. "Like, that's when I say, 'I'm a f---ing unicorn,' people are f---ing confused. I'm a f---ing unicorn, and you're not going to tell me I'm f---ing not. I'm a f---ing table. I'm a f---ing table, and you can literally be whatever you f---ing want, as long as you believe that's what you are."

Right now, Odd Future most assuredly believe they are unicorns. And tables. From unlikely beginnings — they formed as a ratty skateboarding crew in Los Angeles, then graduated to making homemade videos that combined gross-out stunts with lyrical odes to inebriation, masturbation and wanton violence (missing-in-action member Earl Sweatshirt's "EARL" video does a nice job of summing up this early period) — have somehow become the hottest-tipped act in hip-hop. They're now the subject of millions of "next big thing" features, even if they don't want to be (Tyler reportedly turned down XXL magazine's offer to appear on the cover of its 2011 "Freshman" Class issue, and just as many analytical pieces about the very nature of their success.

From their loose status — there are something like 11 people in Odd Future, depending on whether or not you count Earl, who is either in boot camp or living with his mother — to their improbable rise from the blogs to the big stage, to Tyler's short-shorts and knee-high socks, there truly is nothing else like them in hip-hop today. They are a knee-jerk reaction to the past decade of the genre that has been dominated by sneering, WWE-style heels, boastful "Scarface" impresarios, super-producers-turned-rappers and dudes who just plain-old use Auto-Tune. This is apparent in their live shows (which usually devolve into mosh-pit-and-middle-finger frenzies) and their prodigious, grits-and-gravel back catalog (three group albums and seven solo albums, all available for free on their website). Not surprisingly, they've also earned more than their fair share of detractors, who call them a flash in the pan or, worse yet, "horrorcore" revivalists. But this does not faze Odd Future in the slightest. They are, after all, f---ing unicorns, creatures that just seem unreal, not to mention slightly magical, and they don't have time for the haters.

But today, hip-hop's brightest hopes are riding the Chinatown bus. Seems all the hype in the world couldn't get them train tickets to Philly, or, God forbid, seats on an airplane. Tyler, Hodgy Beats (with whom he appeared on "Late Night"), Domo Genesis, Left Brain and producer Syd tha Kyd do their best not to terrify the elderly Chinese women who are making the trip with them, preferring instead to listen to new songs on massive headphones. As a collective, they are always working, but really, everything is pointing toward the upcoming release of Tyler's Goblin album, on XL Recordings. The video for its first single, "Yonkers," produced entirely by Tyler himself, was on its way to breaking the million-view mark while they were on the bus, thanks in no small part to its sputtering backbeat, Ty's jaw-dropping verses and the shocking video, in which he devours a hissing cockroach, vomits, removes all his clothes and hangs himself. Big things are happening, even if the Odd Future kids — especially Tyler — don't seem willing to admit it.

But can they cross over to the mainstream? It would take, to say the very least, a rather seismic shift in popular tastes, but I suppose anything is possible. As I wrote last week, it seems like rock music is already undergoing a similar shift — in with the old, out with the new — and perhaps hip-hop is due. Things simply cannot continue on at their current pace. And who knows, maybe Odd Future are the group that will push things forward. Watching them run amok in Philly that evening — humping the city's iconic "Rocky" statue, skateboarding around the streets — and then whip the crowd at the Barbary into a madcap froth, it's not exactly a stretch to say they're already on their way. Can they keep it together? Can they coexist? Can they free Earl? Shoot, they've already made it this far, by doing their own thing, their own way, so who's to say they can't take it all the way? They can be unicorns. They can be tables. And hopefully, someday, they can even be passengers in first class.

Could Odd Future ever become mainstream successes? Should they? Sound off in the comments.
