On Monday, we learned the names of some of the stars set to appear on Songs For Japan, a compilation album to benefit the ongoing disaster relief efforts in the earthquake- and tsunami-ravaged nation. And on Friday (March 25), not only was the full roster of artists and songs revealed, but the album was made available for purchase on iTunes.

Lady Gaga, Eminem, Beyoncé, Madonna, the Kings of Leon and Katy Perry joined a list of already-announced artists like Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna on the album, which is available worldwide on the iTunes Store for $9.99. Proceeds from the sale of Songs for Japan will benefit the Japanese Red Cross Society.

All in all, 38 artists lent songs to the album, including legends like Bob Dylan, U2, Bruce Springsteen and the late John Lennon; country acts like Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum; rock artists like the Foo Fighters, R.E.M. and Bon Jovi; pop icons like Madonna and Pink; and top hitmakers like Bruno Mars and David Guetta.

All acts appearing on Songs for Japan — and their labels and music publishers — have waived their royalties and proceeds from the worldwide sales of the album to insure the Japanese Red Cross Society receives as much support as possible. The JRCS will use funds from the album to support its ongoing relief efforts and for eventual recovery assistance to the areas hardest hit by the earthquake and subsequent tsunamis. iTunes will also donate its proceeds from the album's worldwide sales to the benefit of the JRCS.

On Wednesday (March 30), Justin Bieber shared with his fans the DVD release date for his flick, "Never Say Never." So, when will fans be able to experience Bieber in 3-D in the comfort of their own homes?

"So here is the big news they were waiting for me to announce to u once off stage ... Thanks to everyone for seeing #NSN3D around the world! so we are ... OFFICIALLY getting #NEVERSAYNEVER3D to Blu-ray & DVD May13th," he tweeted. "Preorder NOW."

He also had another special announcement for a few lucky fans who purchase a special version of the flick, adding, "And I'm signing some for my fans! #MUCHLOVE."

Aside from what fans already saw in theaters, the Blu-ray/DVD combo features a dance-off between Bieber and his crew, the full-length performance of "Favorite Girl," Bieber's team surprising fans with free tickets and a sendoff for JB's old swoop hairstyle.

Fans already came out to see the flick when it hit theaters in February, helping to solidify its status as one of the highest-grossing documentaries of all time. This will mark the third release for the film, which hit theaters twice already.

Regarding the film's message, Bieber explained to MTV News, "People didn't really know, they didn't understand that I've been playing music ever since I was born, and it's always been in me. And this movie is really going to show that I'm not just some packaged thing that some A&R put together. It was actually just me living my dream and just making music.

"Fans will be really excited to see that I'm just a regular 16-year-old having fun, just living my dream," he said. "And it's possible for anyone to live theirs."

The film shows Bieber skillfully playing piano, drums and guitar. It is part concert film, part documentary, complete with interviews from some of the people closest to the teen phenom. It features cameos by Miley Cyrus, Usher and Ludacris, among others, in interviews and concert performances filmed at Madison Square Garden last year.

Usher Says New 'Rev Pop' Project Is A 'Movement'

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like 'Yeah!' and 'OMG.'
By James Montgomery

Usher
Photo: MTV News

With the success of songs like "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," "Hot Tottie" and "OMG," Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he's looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a "movement."

It's something he's calling "Rev Pop" — or, simply, "Rev" — and though he's already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn't reveal much, he did let it be known that "Rev" isn't exactly something new. In fact, he's been doing it for a while now.

"I'll give it to you this way: At a later date, I'll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I've done it before, I did it with 'Yeah!' " he said, "taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with 'OMG,' once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

"It's bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here," he said, gesturing toward his heart, "And that's what Rev Pop is. There's more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that's just what I'm going to tell you right now. 'Rev' is what it's called ... the movement is called Rev."

Usher wouldn't say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they're going to be impressed ... if not a little shocked.

"Stay alive," he smiled, "Because you're definitely going to be in for a surprise."

Britney Spears To Release Two 'Till The World Ends' Videos

A director's cut and a choreography cut of the video will both be released.
By Jocelyn Vena

Who needs one "Till the World Ends" video when you can have two? Well, it seems that Britney Spears' fans will get just that.

JustJared.com reports that the singer will release two videos for her second single from Femme Fatale. According to the site, "The director's cut will have more of an apocalyptic story line while the choreography cut will have the unabridged version of Britney's dance moves."

The video was directed by Ray Kay and shot in Los Angeles last month. The video features Spears in sexy, body-hugging clothes getting sweaty with her dancers. "The set was a little much. It was grimy and gross and it felt like there was poop everywhere when there wasn't," she recalled in Sunday's MTV special "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale." "It was sweat and it was disgusting sometimes ... [I] tough it out," she laughed.

In the video sneak peek featured in the special, Spears opted to change out of her sexy heels to dance in more practical Uggs. "It hurts ... but it looks good," she explained. "It wasn't a full-length shot, so a girl's about comfort when it's not showing." She later added, "It was a lot of fun. I had never worked with Ray Kay before. I was really happy with the work we did."

Spears' "Till The World Ends" songwriter, Ke$ha, opened up to People.com about how she'd like to hang out with the pop star now that they've worked on a hit pop song together.

"Skinny dipping. It would be a dress-up-like-Ke$ha-or-Britney party. Either her place or my place, it doesn't matter," the "Blow" singer said, describing their perfect hang-out. "I have a small, salt-water pool [at my house in Nashville] that has laser beams in it and a stereo so you can be underwater listening to music."

Are you excited for two "Till the World Ends" videos? Let us know in the comments!

Robert Pattinson Says 'Cosmopolis' Co-Star Sarah Gadon Has 'A Great Face'

Actor also tells MTV News about working on a 'very specific accent' for the David Cronenberg film.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Robert Pattinson
Photo: MTV News

Thanks to all the quality time MTV News has been getting with Robert Pattinson lately, via our "MTV First: Robert Pattinson" and "Water for Elephants" interviews, we've been able to glean a few fun details from the "Twilight" superstar about his upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated "Breaking Dawn: Part 1," of course, as well as the slightly more mysterious "Cosmopolis."

What we know so far is that Pattinson will be directed by David Cronenberg in the role of young finance guru Eric Packer, opposite Sarah Gadon, who recently signed on to play Packer's estranged wife. The novel is a modern reinterpretation of James Joyce's classic "Ulysses," set in New York in the year 2000, around the burst of the dot-com bubble. Most of the action in the book takes place over the course of one day, in the limousine Packer takes to his various errands.

When MTV News caught up with Pattinson, we asked him for his thoughts on his new co-star.

"I've seen a couple of things she's done. She's really good," Pattinson said of Gadon. "She has a great face. ... I haven't talked to her yet, but I think it's going to be a great cast."

Regarding other prep work he's doing before filming begins sometime next month, Pattinson is getting some voice coaching.

"I'm working with a dialect coach now. There's this very specific accent," he said. "And yeah, just sort of various sort of things."

For those unfamiliar with Gadon, a 23-year-old Toronto native, she most recently worked with Cronenberg in his "A Dangerous Method" and has a slew of TV credits to her name, including the SOAP Net series "Being Erica" and ABC's "Happy Town."

Report: Matt Lauer Planning to Leave "Today" Show

Following exit rumors of other highly-successful news media and well-over a decade at the anchor desk, Matt Lauer will reportedly resign from the "Today" show at the end of the year.

A source revealed the details to ET, saying Matt has already notified his NBC bosses that he won't be renewing his contract after it's December 31, 2010 expiration.

This comes after word spread of a possible September departure of co-host Meredith Vieira and, as well talk that his old "Today" cohort, Katie Couric is planning to leave the "CBS Evening News."

The hit morning program tried to quiet the fuss, saying, "There seems to be an awful lot of speculation around news anchors these days, and it's not our practice to comment on any of it. Matt Lauer has a long term contract with NBC News and 'Today.'"

Britney Spears Says 'Till The World Ends' Has 'Good Energy'

'If it puts me in a good mood, it clicks for me,' singer tells Ryan Seacrest of Ke$ha-penned track.

Britney Spears got her fans amped up for her forthcoming album, Femme Fatale, when she released its second single, "Till the World Ends," on Thursday. The chugging, Ke$ha-penned club banger is all about getting your dance on. And when Spears stopped by Ryan Seacrest's radio show on Friday (March 4), she admitted that the song just felt right for her as soon as she heard it.

" 'Till the World Ends' is fun! It's fun. I like it. It's good energy," she said of the track, which was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Billboard. "I'm a vibe person, and I think I love good-mood songs, and if it puts me in a good mood, it clicks for me."

As for the album, which already spawned a chart-topping single, "Hold It Against Me," she teased, "I think it's my best work yet. I listened to it on the way over here. It's definitely something you want to work out to. ... And I'm a dancer, so it's definitely something I can work with."

"Oh my God! Will.i.am is amazing," Spears said of the producer, who teased the track "The Big Fat Bass" recently. "He's so much fun and he's funny and he's a charm. His music is so much fun. When they told me I was going to be working with him, I couldn't wait. If it gets you going, you get excited, and he has that type of energy."

In addition to talking about the album, Spears also shared plans for a summer tour. And she talked about how she's keeping in shape these days as she amps up to promote the album, which drops March 29. "I have a trainer. [I go] on the treadmill for 30 minutes and we do a lot of cardio, running," she explained. "He kicks my butt. You pay to hate your trainer!"

It seems that the workout regimen has also had an effect on her beau, talent agent Jason Trawick, who, according to Seacrest, was "pudgy" before he hooked up with the pop star. "He wasn't pudgy," she laughed. "He wasn't pudgy. He is definitely ripped. He just got on this health kick. I guess he's on a health kick. He eats what he wants."

'Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale' Takes Fans Behind The Scenes

Spears opens up about her life and music and takes fans to her Las Vegas show in new MTV special.
By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears brought fans and MTV cameras along as she prepared for the release of her latest album, Femme Fatale, resulting in the MTV special "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale." In the show, which debuted on MTV on Sunday, Spears works to put the finishing touches on one of the tracks on the album, the will.i.am-produced "Big Fat Bass."

"I love his work. He's all over the place. He's brilliant," she told Sway Calloway about hooking up with the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "When he does talk, he blows you away."

Of her ability to work hard and fast in the studio, she said, "That's the way I've always been. I'm there to work, I'm very professional," later adding, "I really like to choose songs that empower people. I have a team of people that I work with."

After meeting with will.i.am in the studio, fans get to see Spears on set as she shoots the Ray Kay-directed video for her single "Till the World Ends." Shot in a "grimy and gross" warehouse, Spears worked to make sure that everything "looks fresh." "I feel like I've done so many videos, I'm at the point I want to enjoy myself," she explained of making videos a decade and a half into her career.

Spears admits that she's felt the need to create ever since she was a child, when her mother's friends would wonder why she was always jostling about. "When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative," she recalled. "That's when my mom realized I'm a really creative person."

The pop singer explains that when she's not being a "perfectionist" at dance rehearsals, she's busy being a mom to her two sons, Jayden and Sean. "I'm usually pretty busy when I'm not working," she says. "I have two children, so I usually get them up in the morning, and I'm usually at the gym, and I help cook dinner sometimes ... a lot of the stuff that I do I do early in the morning when my boys are at school."

In the special, she and her assistant take a moment at a Starbucks before the Femme Fatale rehearsals really amp up, and she admits she needs those moments to breathe on occasion. "It was nice just to have a moment to ourselves to sit and talk about shoes," she said.

The special follows Spears in Las Vegas, where she puts on a surprise show for her fans at the Palms Hotel and Casino. "It was very exciting. The fans were amazing. It was good energy, especially when they're screaming," she said. "They hype you up and make you feel larger than life."

For now, Spears' life is her career and her family, and she says that she wouldn't mind doing this for the rest of her life. Or not. "I hope so," she said when asked if she'll still be doing this in her 50s, like Madonna. "Or maybe [I'll be] doing nothing!"

Lady Gaga Celebrates Birthday At Los Angeles Concert

Mother Monster tells the crowd at her show on Monday that her fans are 'the best birthday present you could give me.'
By Kara Warner

Lady Gaga performs at Staples Center on Monday
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

LOS ANGELES — A Lady Gaga concert is unlike any other live music event for two reasons: First, Mother Monster obviously puts on one helluva show — passionate, energetic, etc. — and second, there's the amount of effort her most dedicated fans, the Little Monsters, put into their unbelievable, outrageous and scandalous ensembles. Braving the teeming masses in the floor section of a Gaga concert is like being dropped in the midst of a half-naked, sparkly, Lycra-filled Halloween parade.

So was the scene on Monday night at the Staples Center, where Gaga shared her blood, sweat and tears with the nearly 20,000 screaming audience members ... on her 25th birthday, no less.

"I'm going to kick your ass tonight!" Gaga declared after her opening number, "Dancing in the Dark," and at the start of "Just Dance." She challenged the crowd to stay on their feet and to be themselves, which became the theme of the evening.

"The Monster Ball will set you free," she said during a beat between "Just Dance" and "Fame." "You can be whoever you want to be."

Naturally, the crowd ate up every word Gaga spoke, particularly her words of encouragement and love for her fans.

"Thank you for the best birthday present you could give me," she said, indicating that the present was her fans themselves. "Thank you for still buying tickets to my show. Thank you for believing in my music."

And in between the heartfelt thanks, the Lady left room for joking around. She told the crowd that her dad had advised her to be extra careful during her birthday performance because her fans will throw gifts up onstage. "He said, 'Please be careful what you put in your mouth.' " Also, when one concertgoer indicated that they had brought her Nutella, she said she had to politely "rebuke" the gift because she had to prep for the "Judas" video.

Besides Gaga's words of wisdom and heartfelt thanks, of course, there was plenty of her chart-topping music. The major highlights of the show — in addition to a rousing "Happy Birthday" sung by the crowd toward the end of the evening — included "Born This Way," which Gaga performed twice: the first, a stripped-down version she delivered at the piano and accompanied with an inspiring story regarding a long-desired pair of ruby slippers and dreams that really do come true ("Someday someone will hand you a pair of ruby slippers!"); the second, her show-stopping second encore. Also very worthy of a mention were "Alejandro" — the choreography performed by Gaga's extremely talented and acrobatic core of dancers was incredible — the new ballad "You and I" and the always-killer "Bad Romance."

Do you have belated birthday wishes for Lady Gaga? Share them in the comments.

Robert Pattinson Calls His Elephant Co-Star A 'Full-On Method Actor'

'She's an incredible creature,' RPattz tells MTV News of 'Water for Elephants' focal point Tai.
By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Robert Pattinson
Photo: MTV News

Robert Pattinson has certainly had some very nice things to say about his "Water for Elephants" leading lady Reese Witherspoon, recently telling MTV News that she has a "nice energy about her." But it's obvious that RPattz holds a special place in his heart for another female co-star: Tai the Elephant.

"She's an incredible creature," the 24-year-old actor said of his famous pachyderm co-star.

In fact, he and Tai (Pattinson previously joked that she has "done way more movies than I have") got incredibly close at one point. Pattinson revealed to MTV News that he actually got in Tai's mouth, describing the moment as "the most incredible thing in the world. You're being lifted up by her gums. ... She puts just the right amount of pressure on so she isn't hurting you. It's so strange."

But it wasn't just the closeness he and Tai shared on the "Water for Elephants" set that made him appreciate working with a wild animal. "The best thing is that it takes away from the mundane [parts] of the day. If you're doing 20 takes or something, and there's a character who's going to be doing something totally different every time, it's always exciting. It's like working with a full-on method actor who's just improvising," Pattinson said of the experience.

Still, it's not always a day in the park working with animals, as Pattinson and Witherspoon quickly came to find out. As he recalled during "MTV First: Robert Pattinson," one day on the set, his beloved Tai let loose the "most incredible fart into Reese's face ... like a hurricane. Thunderous."

Even Pattinson had his moments where Tai's presence was a distraction. "If there's, like, an actual moment you have to get across [emotion], and suddenly there's, like, a trunk in your face," Pattinson said with a laugh.

Still, the actor seemed to find that the positives outweighed the negatives when it came to working with Tai and all the other "Water for Elephants" animals. "It's incredible," he said. "It just makes everything more interesting."

"Water for Elephants" arrives in theaters April 20.

Check out everything we've got on "Water for Elephants."

Are Charlie Sheen's Live Shows Bombing?

Are Charlie Sheen's Live Shows Bombing?

Is Charlie Sheen's "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option" tour another winning chapter in the actor's unceasing media onslaught, or is it an epic misfire? Well, it depends who you ask and -- more importantly -- in which city they saw the show.

Sheen, 45, kicked off the national tour of his fast-selling live "comedy" show with a Saturday night performance in Detroit, and was nearly booed off stage within half an hour. But resilient guy that he is, Charlie bounced back just one night later with a generally well-received show in Chicago that prompted the actor to tweet: "TOOK ONE NIGHT BUT HE IS #winning. Yet again."

Indeed, according to Entertainment Weekly, which live-blogged the opening night in Motor City, that performance was an unmitigated disaster. Audience members -- many of them clad in Charlie Sheen slogan shirts -- mercilessly booed the actor and walked out en masse about 30 minutes into the show. Perhaps that's because the show was little more than a hastily slapped together montage of Sheen's nonsensical monologues and semi-related video clips, as well as some disjointed stunts that included the burning of one of Uncle Charlie's Two and a Half Men shirts, a makeout session between Sheen's "goddesses" on stage, and a mock presidential address, the "Manny-Fest-Oh," which the crowd began booing within 20 minutes.

Although Sheen promised the fans that he was "finally here to identify and train the Vatican assassin locked inside each and every one of you," his largely improvised monologues about "monkey-eyed sweat-eating whores" and "freedom from the dour and sour taste of malignant reproach" basically just confused and annoyed everyone. Instead of reinforcing his fans' admiration, he ended up shouting, "I already got your money, dude!" to the restless crowd. And the critics were even less kind, if that's possible.

But true to the name of the tour, defeat was not an option for Sheen. And just one night later, the actor hit Chicago with a revamped version of the act that received much better reviews from both fans and critics. Doing away with the video clips, audience ridicule and faux presidential addresses, the Chicago show assumed a talk-show format, with an unnamed pal asking Sheen questions. And so Charlie did what he does best, opining on subjects ranging from marriage ("marriage sucks") to his goddesses ("the definition of love is that they have not disallowed me everything that makes me happy") to Two and a Half Men ("If they ask me to go back, I will. I signed a contract.") and his costar Jon Cryer ("I said some s--- about him that was wrong. I love him. He's a rock star."), People.com reported.

Sheen himself seemed proud of his resiliency, telling E! that the new show is "f---ing working" and that he may still tinker with the format. "There's a couple things here I've got to f---ing work out," Sheen says. "I don't know if I start the show alone and it turns into (a Q&A format) or I just say with this 'cause it's f--king working and we'll f---ing return to it if I don't."

The actor went on to say that he may incorporate more of an audience Q&A into the show going forward, though that technique met with mixed results in Detroit. "We've already got (questions) submitted and we say, you know, so-and-so from f---ing Bakersfield or Loserville, F---ing Michigan, wants to know," he says. "Then it's like, 'Yeah, I don't feel like talking about that' (or) 'You know, that's a really good f---ing question, wow."

Either way, Sheen insists he's willing to do whatever it takes to make the show work. He tells E! that after bombing in Detroit he took the tour bus to his hotel in Chicago and stayed up to the wee hours revamping the show. Still, even Sheen isn't bulletproof; he admits that the reception in Detroit did get to him. "Yeah, so there was a moment on the bus when it was like, we can just keep going, we can drive home," he says. But he's quick to add: "I'm like, yeah, that's what losers do, man. F--- it, you know? Maybe I just, you know, needed a bigger challenge."

Candice Swanepoel: Victoria's Secret Model Says She's Healthy

Candice Swanepoel: Victoria's Secret Model Says She's Healthy

Model Candice Swanepoel raised eyebrows when she turned up to model Victoria's Secret's new swimwear line in Los Angeles on Wednesday looking shockingly thin. Fans and news outlets across the Web immediately voiced their concern that Swanepoel appeared significantly skinner than she had in photos taken just months before. CBS News called her "startlingly slim," while Hollywood Life remarked that Swanepoel was "scarily, skeletally, stick-thin."

But the 22-year-old South African beauty (pictured above center, with fellow models Alessandra Ambrosio, left, and Adrianna Lima) wants her fans and the world to know that there's no cause for concern. "I am healthy and happy," Swanepoel tells People. "I'm heartened to know how much everyone cares about me, but in this case, everything is normal and good."

And we're heartened to know that Swanepoel, who recently landed the cover of Victoria's Secret's 2011 swimsuit catalogue, is doing well -- though there's no denying that she is noticeably thinner than she had once been.

Back in November, Swanepoel told ABC News during New York Fashion Week that she was eating steak to try to keep her weight up. "Actually, this year my problem has been more putting the weight on and getting muscle on because it's been really busy," she said at the time. "I've been traveling around like crazy. I get skinnier if I'm very busy. I've been eating steak and everything, so I'm actually looking forward to eating some lighter food after (Fashion Week)." (Click here to watch video of her interview.)

A source tells E! Online that the model's contract with Victoria's Secret -- whose models are known for being curvy -- could be in jeopardy. "There is a really clear criteria for both Angels and the catalogue," says the fashion insider. "Their career path is Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue then to Angel, it's the highest paying contract there is, period. The image is about being voluptuous, it's not fat, but it's curvy."

But the insider adds that it's unlikely that she'd lose her contract. "I'd be surprised if it went that far, she'll right herself first. Of course they'll talk to her though, the company is all about image."

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps

Album art from Pink Floyd, Blur and David Bowie also included.

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.

The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin's IV, David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, The Clash's London Calling, New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, Blur's Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.

"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."

Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."

"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.

For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.

Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Thia Megia, Naima Adedapo 'Intimidated' By Female 'American Idol' Voters

'When they get a crush ... then we're done,' Adedapo says of three consecutive male 'Idol' champs.
By Gil Kaufman

It hasn't escaped the attention of the female contestants on "American Idol" that a woman hasn't won the reality competition in three seasons. And they can't help but notice that so far in season 10, the bottom three has had an excess of estrogen.

But on Friday (April 1), one night after becoming the third and fourth female casualties so far this year, Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo weren't making any excuses.

"We sort of figured since there were more females watching this show the votes were going to be more for the guys," Megia, 16, the youngest contestant in "Idol" history, said during a conference call with reporters.

And while she made a point to give props to the "incredible" guy singers left on the show, Megia admitted that the ladies of "Idol" had discussed the potential pitfalls of the large female voting bloc and were a bit worried about how that might impact their stay in the leaky "Idol" mansion.

"[We were] a bit intimidated by all the girls watching the show and knowing that their votes are going to be going for guys," said Megia, who was done in on Thursday night's elimination show by her tepid rendition of Elton John's "Daniel," which she dedicated to her older brother.

Though she echoed that concern, Adedapo said the girls didn't let it get to them because they all had faith in their abilities. "When it comes down to it, the reality is that more than 50 percent of the audience is little teenage girls," said Adedapo, who may have confused some of those tweens with her reggae take of "I'm Still Standing." "When they get a crush ... then we're done."

Despite that worry, Adedapo said she never let it knock her off her unique path on the show, during which she incorporated her colorful style and years of dance experience. "Sometimes people just didn't know where to place me," Adedapo admitted when asked if perhaps she was a bit too different on a season with less outrageous personalities and more focused vocalists.

"I felt like maybe they didn't understand me sometimes," she said, noting that most of the reaction she got from fans was positive and to the effect of "I don't know about you, but I like you." But between her African dance moves and her reggae accent on Wednesday night's show, Adedapo said maybe it was hard to put her in a neat category that made it easy to cast a vote.

Song choice is such a crucial factor that Megia wondered in retrospect if maybe she had made a mistake by not mixing it up and moving away from ballads every week to show another side of herself with an uptempo number. What she didn't regret was sending her rendition of "Daniel" out to her brother and pouring all her emotion into that tune. "I'm glad the last song I did on the show was dedicated to my brother," she said. "[But] I didn't want to come off as just a ballad singer."

Like many "Idol" finalists who leave early, Megia copped to being "devastated" on Thursday night when her ride ended but said she didn't cry for more than 15 minutes or so. "I just told myself things happen for a reason and this is not the end of it," she said, promising that the exposure she got on the show will help her launch a career where she can show America that she's much more than just the high school balladeer.

One of the big subjects of conversation on Friday was the nearly out-of-control emotions fellow teenager Lauren Alaina displayed during the eliminations, which verged on distracting. Adedapo said part of that was Lauren's sadness at losing out on someone who had been a kind of mother figure to her during the finals run. "She kind of cried it out a little big, but that's a natural thing," Adedapo said, explaining that she's always been there to encourage Alaina to have confidence in herself and tell her that she's beautiful and talented.

But losing Megia was a double blow, since the two 16-year-olds had gotten very close during their rehearsals and classes. "It really is like losing a best friend," said Adedapo, who struggled to say goodbye to her pal Jacob Lusk as well.

No matter what happens, both said they were proud of what they did on the show and they're looking forward to the next step. "I just wanted to show every piece of me," Adedapo said of her risk-taking performances. "For me, I'm really about staying true to myself. Once I set my brain on something, I do it."
